Eyes

This project is comprised of a series of large prints (20″x30″) of various people’s eyes displayed together as a single installation. In this arrangement while each eye may loose its concrete identity (many of the subjects cannot even find their own eye among the others), they retain a tremendous amount of character and individuality. The photographs and their orientation retain the evidence of their creation. The photographer used a studio 4×5 camera at full extension with an overhead projector lens taped to the front of the camera’s lens, this permitted extremely close focus of just a few centimeters and extremely narrow depth of field. To make each photo, the subject had to lay their head on a pillow to reduce the risk of the natural tremors of the body pulling their eye out of focus. It was an intimate, almost meditative, process. They were illuminated by a single large soft box, which is visible in each eye.
